About Us

The Ashland/Bayfield County Master Gardeners Association was organized in February 2006. We joined the Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association (WIMGA) in September 2007. Association members from Ashland and Bayfield Counties meet monthly at various locations or via Zoom on the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m.

Our association includes members from Madeline Island and the Bayfield Peninsula on the north, the Iron River and Barnes area to the west, Ashland and Marengo area to the east, and the Cable, Drummond and Mellen areas to the south. The general public is invited to participate in our monthly programs and educational events.

We have held Winter/Spring Garden Series and monthly programs on a wide variety of subjects each year, including Xeriscaping Strategies, Native Plants in the Landscape, Low Maintenance Gardening, Invasive Species, Landscape Design, Summer Bulbs and other subjects.

We have worked with four area elementary schools in soil preparation and raised beds, planting and general maintenance, and erected a high tunnel at one of our local schools. Members have done daily ILID video camera review of boats entering and exiting a local boat landing from May to October, reporting on aquatic invasive species found on trailers and boats; we have also conducted water quality testing on an inland lake.

Focusing on native shoreline restoration, planting trees and grasses and other native species, members have assisted in several restoration projects at Little Sand Bay, and Raspberry Island and Otter Island in the Apostle Islands; members also worked on invasive species eradication on Madeline Island and at NGLVC in Ashland.

We have participated in the annual Ashland and Bayfield County Fairs with award winning educational exhibits. We were awarded a Blue Ribbon for our Educational "How to attract butterflies and hummingbirds exhibit" at the Bayfield County Fair.

Our organization has participated in “Ask the Master Gardeners” projects such as the annual spring Dairy, Farm and Garden Show in Ashland and Bayfield in Bloom’s WPR broadcast of Garden Talk in mid-May. Our members have hosted numerous garden tours of individual MG’s gardens throughout the two-county area. We regenerated and maintained various community gardens throughout the two counties in Ashland, Barnes, Bayfield, Cable, Iron River, Lake Namakagon and Madeline Island.

Our members have taught classes in composting, 4-H gardening, and gardening with native plants. We, along with other Northern District Master Gardeners, hosted the Annual WIMGA Conference in 2012 and members have attended annual conferences throughout the state each year.
